Warrants were issued against a total of 183 people, 36 of whom were already in custody, for crimes including attempted murder, extortion and drug trafficking, police said.
Anti-mafia prosecutors say the 'ndrangheta crime syndicate has quietly massed power in Italy and abroad, obtaining a virtual monopoly on cocaine importation in Europe.
"Betraying him was his passion for soccer and for the Napoli team,'' police said in a statement.
Most of the drug trade in Italy, and much of Europe, is dominated by the 'Ndrangheta crime group, a highly sophisticated global network dealing in international narcotics that operates in 40 countries.
Pasquale Bonavota was leaving Genoa's cathedral when he was arrested and was carrying a fake ID, local media said.
The drugs were found wrapped in 70 waterproof packages held together by nets and kept afloat by life preservers, with a tracking device attached.
