VALLEJO, Calif. (KCBS)- A suspect has been hospitalized after being shot by Vallejo police at an event in that city Saturday night.

Details are sketchy, but according to Sergeant Jeff Bassett, there were more than a thousand people at a "Mac Dre Day" gathering in North Vallejo Park when around 10:30 p.m. a robbery happened. Police were patrolling the event and intercepted the male suspect, who was shot multiple times.

"There were probably about a thousand people from what I understand in the park. Because of the amount of people we were dealing with, we called for mutual aid from surrounding agencies to help us deal with that crowd," said Bassett.

The officers involved in the shooting were not injured.

Several callers to the KCBS newsroom reported dozens of police cars speeding toward Vallejo on Highway 80 around the time of the shooting.
