Sonoma County Sheriffs Shoot, Kill Suspected Gang Member

SANTA ROSA (KCBS/BCN) - Sonoma County sheriff's deputies and a CHP officer shot and killed a suspect they are calling a 'known gang member' after a confrontation in unincorporated Santa Rosa on Friday night.

The sheriff's office says someone with a temporary restraining order against the suspect, called 911 at about 10 p.m., saying the suspect was lurking outside his home in the 4000 block of Hargrave Avenue. The suspect had allegedly also violated the same restraining order on Thursday.

Responding deputies arrived on the scene and found the suspect in his vehicle. The deputies said the suspect was verbally confrontational as they tried to negotiate with him for about half an hour. The officers attempted to subdue the suspect with "less-lethal" means that proved ineffective.

Additional officers arrived to assist in the arrest before firing at the man.

According to the sheriff's office the suspect then accelerated his vehicle, ramming it into a sheriff's patrol car. At that point, deputies and the CHP officer discharged their firearms, striking the suspect who was still driving down the road.

After the suspect's vehicle came to a rest a short distance down the road, deputies were able to remove the suspect and allow medical personnel to tend to his wounds.

Although the suspect was transported from the scene by an ambulance, he later died.

The names of the suspect and the officers involved have not yet been released.
