SJ Man Questioned in Bomb Evacuation Scare

A 54-year-old man was under questioning Wednesday as a San Jose police bomb squad poured through his apartment looking for an explosive device that prompted the evacuation of an entire neighborhood Tuesday evening.

San Jose police spokesman Jose Garcia says officers responded to a call from the man's roommate who claimed he was manufacturing or in possession of an explosive device in his home on Avenida Robles in South San Jose at around 5:45 p.m.

"Officers were able to evacuate the neighborhood surrounding the house," said Garcia. "We estimate 20 to 30 residents were evacuated to a nearby church on Blossom Hill Road."

Garcia says the suspect surrendered himself to custody for questioning less than five hours later.

Some evacuated residents were allowed to return home, though those immediately neighboring the suspect's home were asked to stay clear until the bomb squad finished their investigation.
