San Jose Schools' New Superintendent on the Job

Summer school got underway in San Jose Thursday, and it was also the first day on the job for the new SJ School District Superintendent Vince Matthews. He spent his first day on the job visiting four classrooms.

"I'm observing the teaching that's going on, because we want to make sure that our students are getting the skills that they'll need in life," said Matthews.

Matthews, who came here following a four-year stint as the head of the Oakland School District, says that while he intends to make a number of changes, none will take place immediately.

"One of the things I said to this community when I first came in back on May 13th, is that I wanted to, without question, take the first 30 days to embark on a listening and learning campaign, and that's exactly what I'm doing," said Matthews. "I'm listening to the community and learning what our concerns are, as well as what our strengths are as a school district."

He intends to issue a report at the end of the 90-day listening period, on what changes are needed.
