Police fatally shoot suspect in Redwood City following standoff with officers

Officers and emergency personnel converged in a Redwood City neighborhood Tuesday afternoon after a deadly police shooting that followed a standoff with a suspect, authorities said.

Police said someone called 911 around 2:30 p.m. and reported that a man fired a gun into the sidewalk before fleeing from the 200 block of Hazel Avenue.

Officers responded to the area and set up a perimeter, and they said they used a drone to find the suspect. Police said officers then contacted the man while armed with less-than-lethal and lethal ammunition.

According to police, the suspect grabbed his gun and pointed it toward officers, at which point police shot him with both types of munitions. Police said he was taken to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

Redwood City police identified him as 48-year-old Jose Reynaldo Lombera.

Following the shooting, police officers with guns drawn and holding shields were seen focusing on a two-story building and attached sheds in the backyard of a home on Hemlock Avenue, next door to a child daycare center.

Officers were also seen deploying a drone to search the property. The county Office of Public Safety Communications sent an alert of a medical emergency at the location, and the San Mateo County District Attorney's Office confirmed a police shooting had taken place at the scene.

Witnesses in the area told CBS News Bay Area that one person was taken away in an ambulance.

"I was driving on El Camino, and I saw my whole block was full of cops," resident Daisy Morales said.

When she parked her car, she said she saw officers go into her neighbor's home, and that moments later she heard gunshots.

"Around like six gunshots, and someone was taken in the ambulance," Morales said.

Another man, who didn't want to appear on camera, says he always keeps his sliding glass door open, which allowed him to hear the situation unfold.

"It sounded like I heard officers shout 'Don't!' and they shouted, 'Let me see your hands.' Or something to that effect, and then I heard one bang, and it didn't sound like the other shots," the man said. "Then, immediately after that first one, I heard four or five shots that followed it."

Later Tuesday afternoon, the Redwood City Police Department said there was no active threat to public safety and urged people to stay away from the area.

Hemlock Avenue was blocked off between Madrone and Linden streets during the investigation.

Police said no one else was injured during the shooting.
