PGA Delays Tournament Plans At San Francisco's Harding Park
SAN FRANCISCO (CBS SF) - The San Francisco Recreation and Park Commission has agreed to give the PGA more time to stage a major event at Harding Park. Specifically, the Commission is allowing the PGA to back out of its promise to bring a playoff tournament to Harding Park in 2013 or 2014.
Now, golf enthusiasts won't see playoff action at Harding until 2016.
Even before Thursday's vote by the Commission, the PGA had allowed news to leak that the high profile BMW Championship would be played in Indianapolis and Denver the next two years, not at Harding Park - leaving San Francisco without the playoff tournament that was part of the City's agreement with PGA.
But, city leaders insisted it wasn't bad news.
The agreement now calls for at least 8 PGA tournaments at Harding by the end of 2019, instead of six - along with the additional revenue from those additional two events.
Ten years ago, the City first entered into the agreement with the PGA - which in part was designed to improve the condition of Harding Park - so it could host high profile golf events. The agreement has been modified several times prior to this latest change.

"We want to see them here for a long time to come and sometimes partners have to be flexible," said Recreation and Park Department General Manager Phil Ginsburg.
"I think having tournaments scheduled regularly, a few more tournaments, is really good for the golf course," said Ginsburg.
