New Info Released In Modesto Sheriff Shooting
MODESTO (AP) - Authorities have released more information about a fatal shooting involving an off-duty Stanislaus County sheriff's detective and a woman the detective said was brandishing a gun.
Stanislaus County sheriff's spokesman Andrew Winter told the Modesto Bee that detective Kari Abbey shot and killed 31-year-old Rita Elias during an argument Friday evening in a residential area of Modesto.
The detective fired multiple times, but Winter says that investigators had not determined how many shots were fired.
Winter says Abbey has worked for the Sheriff's Department for six years, the last four as a detective.
The sheriff's internal affairs unit and members of the Stanislaus County district attorney's office are investigating.
