Muni Looks To Fix Aging Infrastructure
SAN FRANCISCO (KCBS) -- San Francisco Municipal Transportation Agency officials said they believe they have an idea what is behind the light rail delays that have plagued the system the last two months.
"Over the last month and a half or two months, there's been an inordinate number of these types of delays, but we've been on top of them," said Muni Executive Director Nathaniel Ford.
KCBS' Anna Duckworth Reports:
Ford said Muni is looking at three main causes of the delays: faulty equipment under vehicles have been severing cables, the automatic train control signals have been failing and disturbed blocks have been switching trains to manual mode.
Muni Board Member Malcolm Heinicke uses the light rail system.
"The riders I encounter daily and the people who call or email me," he said. "They want to know, is the system crumbling."
A software upgrade done in mid-October has cut the control signal delays in half.
Director of Transit Services John Haley also said there are plans in the works to fix the other problems.
