Monterey Bay Submarine Captures Elusive 'Black Seadevil' Anglerfish On Video

SAN FRANCISCO (CBS SF) - The spooky deep sea creature that nearly lured in Marlin and Dory with his bioluminescence in the Pixar film 'Finding Nemo' has been captured on video by researchers at the Monterey Bay Aquarium Research Institute.

The fish, known as Melanocetus, or the Black Seadevil lives in deep waters and attracts prey with a glowing orb hanging in front of its face.

"Fewer than half a dozen have ever been captured on film or video by deep diving research vehicles," says MBARI. "It lives in the deep dark waters of the Monterey Canyon."

MBARI researchrs say they believe their footage of the 9 centimeters predator is the first ever of the species alive and at natural depth. These video below was taken at 600 meters.

The pictures were taken earlier this month by the remote sub Doc Ricketts, the same vehicle which discovered a sunken barge in the bay earlier this fall.
