First Winning Mega Millions Ticket Surfaces In South Carolina

SAN FRANCISCO (CBS SF) -- A least one winning ticket for the massive $1.6 billion Mega Millions jackpot was sold in South Carolina, according to that state's official lottery website.

The result showed up on the winning numbers page for the most recent Mega Millions drawing Tuesday night.

So far, no one has stepped forward to claim the prize in South Carolina.

Meanwhile in California, lottery officials confirmed that there were no winning tickets issued in the state for the record jackpot, but there were a number of tickets that matched 5 of 6 numbers, including one in San Francisco.

The winning numbers drawn at 7:45 p.m. PST were 5, 28, 62, 65, 70 with a Mega ball of 5.

If someone has the winning numbers, they will have the option of spreading the $1.6 billion jackpot out over the next 20 years or taking a lump cash sum of $913 million.

While no tickets were jackpot winners in the state of California, there were eight tickets sold that matched 5 of the 6 winning numbers.

Only one of those tickets was sold in the Bay Area. That ticket was purchased at the Safeway Store on the 700 block of Taraval Street in San Francisco, lottery officials confirmed.

KPIX 5 went to the Sunset District Safeway and spoke with the manager of the store.

He said he was aware that a ticket matching 5 of 6 numbers was sold at the Safeway, but said no winner has come forward.

So far, the prize for those tickets with 5 of 6 numbers has not been determined.

Lottery officials said they expected to sell 75 percent of the possible winning combinations of numbers by Tuesday night's drawing.

The Mega Millions jackpot has been growing since July, when a group of California office workers won $543 million.

It costs $2 to play the game. The odds of winning the jackpot aren't good. The chance of matching all six numbers and taking home the grand prize is one in 302.5 million.

Mega Millions is played in 44 states, Washington, D.C., and the U.S. Virgin Islands.
