Man Shot Dead By Fairfield Police Had Followed School Girl, Attacked Officer
FAIRFIELD (CBS SF) - A man that was shot and killed by a Fairfield police officer on Monday was suspected of following an elementary school girl home and taking pictures of her, and allegedly violently confronted an officer who approached him at his home, police said Tuesday.
Officer Adam Ponce was responding to reports that a man in a white and red car had been following an elementary school girl home from school and taking pictures of her.
The parents of the girl spotted a car that fit the description of the one that had been following their daughter and reported the license plate number to the police.
Ponce went to the door of the house where the car was registered in the 700 block of Gold Coast Drive at around 6 p.m. Monday.
A man identified by police Robert McMullan, 51, of Fairfield answered the door and was immediately angry, aggressive and confrontational with Ponce, police said.
McMullan pushed Ponce and attacked him, and in the ensuing struggle the door of the house was knocked off the hinges.
Ponce had to use deadly force to defend himself, and shot McMullan, who was taken to a hospital and later died, police said.
Police said that McMullan has a criminal history in Solano and Napa counties that includes arrests for domestic violence, assaulting police officers, threatening police officers and drug offenses.
Ponce, a 16-year veteran police officer, was placed on administrative leave while police and the Solano County District Attorney's Office investigated the shooting.
