Man Dies in 3-Alarm Fire at Santa Clara Condo Complex

SANTA CLARA (CBS SF) -- One man was killed and several people were displaced by a three-alarm fire at a condominium complex in Santa Clara early Sunday morning.

Fire crews were dispatched a around 2 a.m. to a fire in the Lafayette Americana condo complex at 1031 Clyde Avenue near Loch Lomond Street.

When they arrived, flames were shooting out of the first and second floor of a two-story condo. The firefighters found a victim inside in cardiac arrest and administered CPR and advanced life support but the man died at the hospital.

"This is a stubborn fire -- fire got into the attic and spread laterally to one of the units. We were fortunate to keep it to half of the building, looks like we'll save about two homes there. But, unfortunately, it was a tough fire and looks like it's gonna take about half of this building," Santa Clara fire chief Bill Kelly said.

Firefighters brought the fire under control in about 30 minutes. Two units were damaged and residents of four units were displaced, according to fire officials.

Other than the victim of the cardiac arrest, no one was injured and an investigation is underway into the cause of the fire. No damage estimate is available.
