Main Street Alameda Ferry Terminal shut down until January for renovations

ALAMEDA -- Monday marked the first day of an over two-month closure of the Main Street Alameda Ferry Terminal for a renovation project that will last until the terminal reopens next year. 

The previously announced shut down of the terminal began on Monday, October 23. Ferries will not stop at the terminal until service there resumes on January 2, 2024. 

The Main Street Alameda Ferry Terminal Refurbishment Project is aimed at repairing and replacing the existing aging terminal infrastructure, bringing the terminal into compliance with  seismic safety requirements. Among the improvements set to be made during construction are replacement of current bridge, gangway and terminal foundation as well as the demolition of the existing float  and its replacement. There will also be water utility and electrical upgrades to the structure, including plans to facilitate future electrification of the terminal for zero-emission ferry vessels. 

Once the project is completed in early January, passengers will see benefits including more efficient ferry operations and immproved, modern terminal lighting.

A number of service changes will go into effect for the duration of the project. Ferry passengers heading to downtown San Francisco from Alameda will board at the Alameda Seaplane Lagoon Ferry Terminal at 1701 Ferry Point Road. Weekday and limited weekend service will be available between San Francisco and the Seaplane Lagoon Terminal during the closure. During the closure, all downtown S.F. trips to Alameda will depart from Gate F on the Alameda Seaplane routeThe temporary schedule that starts October 23 can be viewed online. Weekend Oakland ferry service will be temporarily reduced to support the service to Alameda Seaplane. 

For ferry riders going to South San Francisco from Alamedaferries to South San Francisco will only be available out of the Oakland Ferry Terminal at 10 Clay Street in Jack London Square. Free validated parking is available at Washington St. Garage near the Oakland Ferry Terminal to accommodate those riders traveling to and from South San Francisco. There will additionally be a complementary rideshare program available for interested parties. 

Riders will be able to sign up for vouchers to receive two daily free shared Uber rides between anywhere on Alameda Island and the Oakland Ferry Terminal between the hours of 5:30 a.m. and 9 a.m. and 3:30 p.m. and 6:30 a.m. on weekdays. Riders are instructed to fill out the provided online form to receive a voucher in their Uber account applicable during the closure within 48 hours. An email address or mobile phone number are required.

For the duration of the closure, the Alameda Short Hop taking riders from to Oakland from Alameda will be suspended. Riders are advised to use AC Transit Line 96 instead. There also will be no direct ferry service from Alameda to Chase Center for Golden State Warriors games and other events at the arena. Until January, ferry service to Chase Center will only be available from the Oakland Ferry Terminal. Officials strongly recommend passengers make reservations for Warriors games, concerts and other events they plan to attend.
