Lights Out For San Bruno's Lullaby Lane

SAN BRUNO (KCBS) -- One of the oldest children's stores in the country is selling its final crib. The downfall of Lullaby Lane in San Bruno is another story of a small, family-owned business that just can't compete with the big guys, or online retailers.

"The retail business climate has changed," said Barry Gevertz, whose parents opened the store on San Mateo Avenue in 1947.

KCBS' Janice Wright Reports:

He said that recent and rapid changes in how people shop did the business in.

"People will come to a brick and mortar store to look at all of the products and get all of the answers to the questions they have, and then they'll go home and buy it online," said Gevertz.

Online it's usually cheaper, there is often no sales tax, and the product can be delivered to the door. Gevertz figures 50 percent of stores like his have gone under.

Now, the once-crowded and cozy furniture store, which closes for good on Saturday, is heaped with going out of business merchandise.

"We've had a lot of famous people shop here, such as Patty Hearst, and a lot of the Giants," said Gevertz.

But Gevertz said that it's mostly every day parents who will miss the specialty store.
