Less Crime In Some Oakland Neighborhoods In 2011

OAKLAND (CBS SF) -- Central Oakland experienced fewer reports of most types of crime in the first quarter of 2011 than during the same period in 2010, a police captain said Saturday.

In Area 2, located between East and West Oakland, police received fewer reports of violent crime, assault, robbery, rape, shootings, property crime, burglaries and sexual assault, Capt. Edward Tracey said.

The region did, however, have two more homicides in the first quarter of 2011 than 2010, and more vehicle thefts were reported during that time.

There were 144 fewer violent crimes, 19 fewer assaults, 118 fewer robberies, nine fewer rapes, seven fewer shootings, 175 fewer property crimes, 109 fewer burglaries, and 32 fewer sexual assaults.

"These numbers are good, but there is still way too much crime in this city," Tracey said. "We have to continue to stay alert, practice good safety habits and work together to keep this going."
