Homicide Suspect Still At Large In Richmond Teen Slaying

RICHMOND (CBS SF) – Police are continuing their search for clues in the Monday fatal shooting of 14-year-old boy on a Richmond trail, according to police.

Xavier McClanahan, a freshman student at John F. Kennedy High School, was reportedly found suffering multiple gunshot wounds to his upper torso on the Richmond Greenway trail on Monday, Lt. Andre Hill said.

Officers initially responded to the 3300 block of Ohio Avenue at 9:22 a.m. when a shooting was picked up by the ShotSpotter gunshot detection system, Hill said.

Medical responders attempted to stabilize McClanahan after he was discovered, but he was pronounced dead at the scene.

Witnesses reported seeing a male suspect running from the scene, which is near BART tracks and Lovonya DeJean Middle School. Hill said Wednesday morning that no suspect has yet been taken into custody.

Hill confirmed McClanahan was supposed to be in school Monday at the time of the shooting.

West Contra Costa Unified School District spokesman Marcus Walton could only confirm that school was in session, but did not offer details on the reason for the boy's absence or tardiness.

No further information on the case was immediately available.

Anyone with information is urged to call the Richmond Police Department at 510-233-1214.
