MARIN COUNTY (CBS 5) -- They went by the name Nike, after the Greek goddess of victory: A Cold War missile weapon system designed to take down Soviet long-range bombers. In this Good Question: Is it true that there were military guided missile sites around the Bay Area?

ANSWER: Yes, there were seven Nike missile sites in the Bay Area. The National Park Service restored one of the sites, which is located in the Marin Headlands. The sites were capable of carrying nuclear warheads and were installed to protect the U.S. from invading bombers.
