Good Question: How Are Headstones And Grave Markers Made?
COLMA (CBS 5) -- They are supposed to last for eternity and built to withstand everything Mother Nature has got. Normita Fenn asked this Good Question: How are headstones and grave markers made?
ANSWER: Modern day headstones are typically cut from granite or marble slabs and can be chiseled or carved by laser. Some manufacturers prefer to etch the stone by sandblasting under pressure.
John Donohoe, who has been making headstones for more than 40 years, still takes the time to stencil and sandblast the monuments. He said it gives the piece a "cleaner" look. Headstones start around $500 and can cost several million depending on the design.
