Raider Great Ray Guy's Bankruptcy Forces Super Bowl Ring Sale
OAKLAND (CBS SF) - The most famous and probably the best punter in the history of the National Football League has been thrown for a big loss financially, forcing him to part with his Super Bowl rings.
Ray Guy played for the Oakland/Los Angeles Raiders from 1973-1986, picking up rings in Super Bowl XI (a victory over the Vikings), Super Bowl XV (a victory over the Eagles), and Super Bowl XVIII (a defeat of the Redskins).
Guy recently filed for bankruptcy, which prompted the Super Bowl ring auction. The rings were auctioned off Tuesday, bringing in $96,216.
The 61-year-old Guy was a 7-time Pro-Bowler for the Raiders and many question why he is not in the Pro Football Hall of Fame. Guy was inducted into the Bay Area Sports Hall of Fame in 2008 and has an annual award named after him for best collegiate punter.
Guy was the only pure punter ever selected in the first round of the NFL draft when the Raiders selected him in 1973.
