Fewer People Riding San Francisco Muni
SAN FRANCISCO (AP) - Public transit ridership in San Francisco has declined.
The Municipal Transportation Agency reported there were 10 million fewer boardings for the fiscal year ending June 30. The average 591,732 boardings each day is a 4.4 percent drop from the previous year.
The city-run agency said the biggest decrease was on electrified trolley buses, followed by the motor coach fleet and light-rail lines. Only the cable cars saw a ridership boost.
Muni spokesman Paul Rose told the San Francisco Chronicle that service reductions and fare increases are partly to blame. High unemployment also means fewer people using public transportation to and from work.
