Elderly Pedestrian Killed In Wreck Near Marin Civic Center

SAN RAFAEL (CBS SF) - San Rafael police have identified the pedestrian who was struck and killed by a Dodge van near the Civic Center Thursday morning as 79-year-old Jurgen Traub of Nevada City.

Traub was hit by a plumbing company's van at the intersection of Civic Center and Peter Behr drives around 9:40 a.m., police spokeswoman Margo Rohrbacher said.

Traub formerly lived in Greenbrae and was visiting friends in the area, Rohrbacher said.

He was crossing the street toward the farmer's market when he was struck by the Dodge van driving south on Civic Center Drive, Rohrbacher said.

The 38-year-old van driver from Napa was not identified. He stopped immediately and cooperated with the investigation, Rohrbacher said.

A quarter-mile section of Civic Center Drive was closed until 3 p.m. while the Police Department's major accident investigation team investigated the collision, Rohrbacher said.

The farmer's market is open on Thursdays and Sunday mornings. It was very busy at the time of the accident, Rohrbacher said.

Police would like to speak to any witnesses that have not yet been interviewed about the collision, Rohrbacher said. Anyone with information is asked to call San Rafael police at (415) 485-3000.
