Egypt Dominates UN Ambassador's Twitter Town Hall In San Francisco
SAN FRANCISCO (KCBS/AP) - The question of who would come to power in Egypt once President Hosni Mubarak resigns dominated a global town hall meeting held Thursday by the U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations, Susan Rice.
Ambassador Rice reiterated much of what President Obama has said about the Egyptian revolution, and the eventual departure of Mubarak.
"We support Democracy in Egypt and we look forward to its full realization in an orderly and prompt and meaningful way," she said.
Rice took questions submitted via Twitter using a special hash tag, AskAmbRice, facilitating the global forum from the San Francisco headquarters of the micro-blogging site.
The Stanford graduate used the forum to talk about the way technology such as the micro-blogging site has helped frustrated young people affect change in the developing world.
"We have a huge cadre of young people who are increasingly the majority of their national populations who have been left out of jobs, of hope, of opportunity, of political power. And that is, as we are seeing every day, manifestly unsustainable," she said.
KCBS' Doug Sovern Reports:
The town hall was also broadcast live over the Internet on the video streaming service Ustream as part of a State Department initiative to ramp up its use of new media.
The U.S. State Department also launched an Arab language Twitter feed Wednesday.
