A magnitude 3.9 earthquake struck the East Bay Monday evening, according to the U.S. Geological Survey.

Officials said the earthquake struck at 7:46 p.m., with the epicenter about three miles west of Dublin, north of Interstate 580. The preliminary magnitude of the earthquake was 4.0, but it was later downgraded to 3.9.

Visitors to the USGS website, largely from the East Bay, Peninsula and San Francisco, reported light shaking. The earthquake was reportedly felt as far as Sonoma County, the Monterey Bay Area and into the Central Valley.

"We saw on the order of 12,000 felt reports," Robert DeGroot of the USGS told CBS News Bay Area. "So most people probably felt something, to their dishes rattling or maybe some windows rattling and potentially something that felt like a heavy truck passing by your house."

There are no immediate reports of damage or injuries.

"I was in the shower so it was a little worrisome. I almost sat down. I didn't really know what I was supposed to do," said one woman who was celebrating St. Patrick's Day at Gallagher's Pub in Dublin.

Another patron at the pub told CBS News Bay Area's Kelsi Thorud, "I didn't feel it but we did hear of it. It must have happened when it was like pouring down rain and we were more worried about moving stuff and getting it out of the way of the water than we were about whether the earth was moving."

A CBS News Bay Area staffer on a BART train reported that trains were held briefly as crews inspected the tracks. The agency said before 8 p.m. that normal service was resuming following inspections.

The USGS reported at least one aftershock following the initial quake, an earthquake with a preliminary magnitude of 2.9 that struck the same area at 9:46 p.m.
