Daily Madden: Is RG III Ready To Play Again?

KCBS News Anchor Stan Bunger (who along with KCBS Sports Anchor Steve Bitker are the on-air duo known as KCBS Sports Fans) offers his unique sports analysis.

SAN FRANCISCO (KCBS) - ESPN is reporting that Washington Redskins quarterback Robert Griffin III will start the season opener against the Eagles September 9. If so, it would be his first game action since his right knee was surgically repaired following a serious injury at the end of last season.

The Redskins hope Griffin's return will be as successful as Vikings running back's Adrian Peterson's was last year. "It gives you promise that when you get that injury and you have that surgery that doesn't mean that you have to miss anything, and it doesn't mean that when you do come back you can't excel," John Madden told the KCBS Radio morning crew, noting there's no guarantee.

"We all know that everyone heals differently. And if you're a little slower healer and the surgery is a little different or whatever, maybe you get pressed a little. And maybe it's even in your own mind that you get pressed a little to come back too quickly."

When Madden got a text Tuesday from Denver quarterback Peyton Manning, he figured it would be an observation or question about the upcoming NFL season. Instead it was about the new Madden NFL game released this week: "Our long snapper Aaron Brewer received the lowest rating of all players in the NFL in the Madden game," the text read. "We're wondering if we can get some sort of consolation prize like Mr. Irrelevant does in the NFL draft?"

Madden was amused. "You think Peyton Manning is in the playbook working on his audibles and reading defenses and getting his guys in the right position. And he's worried about the Madden grade of a player on his team." Madden said he'll probably honor the request. "I don't want to make fun of (Brewer). I'm kind of leaning right now toward a turducken. A year's supply of turducken. One turducken per month."
