Costly Walnut Creek BART Station Plans Scaled Back
WALNUT CREEK (KCBS)- The price tag on a planned transit village at Walnut Creek BART has grown, as plans for the project have been scaled back.
KCBS' Dave PadillaReports:
The project at Walnut Creek BART tops the $100 million mark, and this is after the size of the project has been significantly reduced.
"There have been two somewhat significant changes, but the overall project itself remains pretty much intact," said developer Frank Arthur.
Plans no longer call for 30,000 square feet of office space at Ygnacio Valley Road, and a parking garage will be built in two phases.
"There will be just under 600 apartments; we'll have retail, and a lot of open space in the project," said Arthur.
Critics of the plan say the transit village may create more traffic congestion, but Arthur contends traffic will actually be reduced.
If all goes well, construction could begin by early 2012.
