Cobbs Leads Cal Over UC Santa Barbara

BERKELEY (CBS / AP) -- Justin Cobbs scored a season-high 25 points and played stellar defense to make up for the loss of Jorge Gutierrez, as California beat UC Santa Barbara 70-50 in the Pete Newell Classic on Monday.

Allen Crabbe had 19 points and six rebounds for the Golden Bears, who made a season-high 11 3-pointers. Cal (10-2) built a comfortable early lead, then scored 18 unanswered points in the second half to remain unbeaten this season at Haas Pavilion.

Nearly a dozen NBA scouts were on hand to watch UCSB's Orlando Johnson, but the 6-foot-5 guard struggled with his shot and finished with a season-low nine points for the Gauchos (5-4).

UCSB has dropped two straight since coach Bob Williams tied the school record for career wins.

Gutierrez, the Bears' top defender and second-leading scorer, was ill.
