Bike Share Program Gets $4.3M Grant; Stations Going Up Along Caltrain Corridor
PALO ALTO (KCBS)— A massive bike share program is going to be launched along the Caltrain corridor and will provide 1,000 bicycles and 100 bike share stations in San Jose, Mountain View, Palo Alto, Redwood City and San Francisco.
Palo Alto Transportation Chief Jaime Rodriguez is excited about the bike program and said it would fill a void for transit riders who get off at a Caltrain stop, but then still have a mile to go in their commute.
"A lot of transit riders sometimes feel discouraged," Rodriguez said explaining that they would be able to hop on a bike and finish their trip.
He said the program's bike share stations would be located in Palo Alto's downtown area, the California Avenue Business District, the University Caltrain station, and at Stanford University.
KCBS' Mike Colgan Reports:
The bike share program is being funded by a $4.3 million grant from the Metropolitan Transportation Commission's Climate Initiatives Grant program.
Valley Transit Authority is the project lead in Santa Clara County and is working with its local and regional partners to launch the pilot program by October 1, 2012.
