The colder weather of winter is upon us, and many are searching for heartier foods to warm their bones. A hot bowl of chili provides the perfect balm for wintertime. Even vegetarians can find comfort in a hot bowl of chili at a number of San Francisco spots. With plenty of vegetarian-friendly area restaurants, options are plentiful and budget friendly. Here are five of the best places in the city to find a piping hot bowl of vegetarian chili.

St. Francis Fountain

Established in 1918, the St. Francis Fountain is one of the oldest ice cream parlors in San Francisco. Open for breakfast and lunch seven days a week, the Fountain serves classic American diner fare like pancakes and hamburgers. The lunch menu is available all day, and includes a vegetarian chili option. The veggie chili bowl is an affordable $6.50 and, in addition to a side of corn bread, it comes with toppings of green onions, sour cream and shredded cheese.

The Grove

The Grove is an eclectic American comfort food restaurant run by co-owners and husband-wife team Anna and Ken. Currently with three locations in the Fillmore, Hayes Valley and Yerba Buena, each Grove locations serves up breakfast, lunch and dinner seven days a week. The very vegetarian-friendly menu includes house-made hearty vegetarian chili. For lunch, pair a cup of chili with one of The Grove's sandwiches or salads and a tall glass of iced tea. More robust appetites will be sated with a larger bowl-sized portion for a reasonable $8.

Brickhouse Cafe

The Brickhouse Café is open seven days a week for breakfast, lunch, dinner and weekend brunch. The cafe also houses a full bar with a happy hour that runs Monday through Saturday. While the house menu features Wagyu beef from a family farm and salmon caught fresh by the owner, it also offers up a decent selection of health-conscious and vegetarian options. The vegetarian chili is available in two different portion sizes and comes topped with shredded cheddar and red onions.

Located on Howard St., Ted's is a full-service delicatessen and neighborhood market, open since 1967. The Greek deli appeared in the 2006 Will Smith movie the "Pursuit of Happyness." Ted's roasts its own meats and prepares most deli offerings from scratch. The daily lunch menu includes a number of mouth-watering vegetarian selections, including an affordable and filling chili.

Hayes Valley's Mercury Café is a bright neighborhood coffee shop and café. Mercury features locally roasted coffees, pastries, soups and sandwiches. Ingredients are sourced locally and feature many independent San Francisco companies, from Molinari & Sons to the Acme Bread Company. The menu includes a veggie chili replete with pinto, kidney and black beans and comes with a side of mixed greens and choice of bread.
