Curly, waffle, handcut, shoestring, garlic, truffle; anyway you want your fries you can find it in San Francisco. While many may still think of french fries as the hamburger's famous sidekick, here are five places with fries that are good enough to stand on their own.

Located in the heart of the Mission District, Andalu is a tapas style restaurant with an international flavor. While small plates are meant to be shared, you will want to get a plate of the curly polenta fries just for yourself. Polenta is a dish made from boiled cornmeal, which is often served as porridge, but when it sets it can be made into the perfect fries. The result is a crunchy outside with a soft and slightly grainy consistency inside. Andalu complements its fries with spicy tomato vinaigrette. It is a fun twist on the typical fry.

These super crispy and light fries are the perfect complement to the wide selection of imported beers on its menu. Even better, diners get to choose from a number of sauces, which include andalouse mayo, Belgian mayo, Jono's roasted garlic mayo, roasted red pepper mayo, wasabi mayo, chipotle mayo, spicy peanut, spicy ketchup, curry ketchup and dijon mustard ketchup. It is the perfect addition to perfectly crispy fries.

The Pied Piper Bar & Grill at the Palace Hotel is an upscale location in the SOMA neighborhood with California fare. In keeping with its sophisticated vibe, the restaurant manages to class up this casual snack up by adding a very expensive ingredient – truffle. These golden potato fries are garnished with sea salt and then served with a truffle aioli. This pricey fungus lends the fries a deep, earthy and nutty flavor. These fries are something that are best served with one of the Pied Piper's classic cocktails.
