Not to be confused with Mexican Independence Day, Cinco De Mayo (Spanish for 'fifth of May') has long been a way to commemorate the freedom of Mexican-Americans during the first years of the American Civil War and Mexico's victory over the French during the Battle of Puebla on May 5, 1862. Today in the U.S., Cinco De Mayo has become a celebration of Mexican pride and heritage. Most celebrate this event with libations aplenty. Where else would you celebrate Cinco De Mayo than at a place that knows its Latin spirits and cuisine? Milagros even has a patio set up with an outdoor tequila bar. You will have to pay for the chips and salsa here, but don't fret, they come to the table warm and in a bucket along with three delightful salsas to dip these munchies of goodness. This simple Mexican restaurant is just south of downtown Redwood City, and is not your average Latin restaurant. Head Chef, Owner and Manager Manuel Martinez creates his own innovative recipes, all with traditional Mexican flavors. The flavors, according to Martinez, are "changed up a lot." La Viga offers upscale quality at bargain prices. Its menu features various seafood dishes, pork, grilled flap meat, roasted chicken dishes and many delicious desserts. Some favored dishes include ceviche de dorado, boiled prawns and caldo de mariscos.

Since opening its doors in 2005, Sancho's has been home to the Peninsula's famous baja-style fish tacos and carnitas burritos. This authentic restaurant, located in the Emerald Hills section, is decorated in conventional Mexican artwork and deep orange walls, and offers three large TVs to watch whatever Cinco De Mayo celebrations are taking place around the nation. Fresh, authentic and one of Palo Alto's favorite spots to enjoy Mexican food, Sancho's is tucked away just off from the hustle and bustle of University Avenue. Sancho's offers some of the best burritos in town. The restaurant includes a salsa bar. Portions are generous and sometimes even described as 'monstrous.' This is a cash-only establishment.

Located on the west side of El Camino, enjoy your Cinco De Mayo at this small, family-run restaurant with a friendly staff, delicious food and some of the best fried ice cream. Much of the décor will bring many Mexican natives a feeling of nostalgia – with its large plants and interior walls that look authentically old. The chips are authentic. The guacamole is freshly made. Do not go here without a reservation. La Fonda has a full bar and back parking lot.
