BART Budget Approved

OAKLAND, Calif. (KCBS) A temporary fare rollback is on the way for BART passengers as the Board of Directors has approved a 2011 budget.

The $589 million operating budget includes a $4.5 million surplus. BART Director Tom Radulovich said his constituents aren't clamoring to use part of the money for a price break.

"Over the last few weeks, people have been coming up to me on the trains and at work and elsewhere saying, you should save the money," said Radulovich.

Director Lynette Sweet said the 3 percent rollback would last about four months.

"I've already expressed my opinion on putting some of this money into the reserve," she said.

A million dollars will be held in surplus. Funds will be used to hire four full-time train car cleaners, delay a paratransit fee hike, install destination TV monitors in stations and upgrade the emergency command center.

Director Joel Keller also pushed across a provision allowing for spending adjustments.

"Before it's implemented, it comes back to the board with staff recommendations before any funds are expended," said Keller.

The 2011 operating budget was approved on a 6-3 vote.
