BART Needs To Shut Transbay Tube For 5 Days, Likely Over Labor Day Weekend
OAKLAND (KCBS)— BART is announcing a major service disruption for its riders this summer. Critical track maintenance and safety work on the 43-year-old system will close the Transbay Tube, halting San Francisco to East Bay service for five days.
According to officials, the closure for work near West Oakland Station, will likely happen the first weekend in August and again for three days over Labor Day Weekend with the holiday falling on September 7th.
About 100,000 riders will instead board BART buses to cross the Bay while the maintenance work takes place.
"There is no substitute for BART. That capacity is really irreplaceable," said John Goodwin from the Metropolitan Transportation Commission.
Fortunately, San Francisco Giants will be playing on the road over the holiday weekend. However, the A's will be in Oakland. There's also a Billy Joel concert scheduled at AT&T Park for September 5th.
The dates aren't set in stone yet, but BART wants to give the public and other transit agencies an ample warning for the closure.
