49ers' New Stadium May Thwart Plan For McCartney Farewell Candlestick Concert
SAN FRANCISCO (KCBS) -- You might sum this up as 'band on the run.'
A potential farewell concert by Paul McCartney at Candlestick Park may move from the 49ers old home to their new home in Santa Clara.
KCBS and Chronicle Insider Phil Matier reports in Sunday's Matier and Ross column that the 49ers are in talks to have McCartney perform the opening concert at the new Levi's Stadium.
San Francisco Mayor Ed Lee's office has been in talks with the former Beatle since last year to perform a final concert at Candlestick, the site of the Beatles final paid concert in 1966.
City officials reportedly feel "blind-sided" by the talks between the 49ers and McCartney's promoters.

"The 49ers have sunk a billion dollars into that new stadium; they feel they've got financial responsibilities to their backers, to their sponsors—at least that's the party line they're putting out," Matier told KCBS.
"But I've got to say that there are not a lot of great feelings at San Francisco about this because Mayor Ed Lee has been doing his best to be as friendly as possible about the 49ers exit."
Mayoral spokeswoman Christine Falvey tells Matier and Ross that regardless of how it all plays out, "the city is going to have a great farewell for Candlestick for the public."
