1 Dead, 1 Injured In Berkeley Shooting

BERKELEY (BCN) - At least a few dozen shots were fired in a shooting near a Berkeley barbershop Tuesday morning that left one man dead and another seriously injured, Berkeley police spokeswoman Sgt. Mary Kusmiss said.

The shooting was reported on Sacramento Street south of Russell Street at 8:43 a.m.

Kusmiss said that although the investigation was still in its early stages and a motive hasn't been determined, police don't believe the shooting was random.

"We believe that the suspects were focused on the victims because they fired so many rounds," Kusmiss said.

Officers who responding to 911 calls about the shooting found two male adults lying on the sidewalk just south of the Johnson's House Styles barbershop at 2914 Sacramento St., she said.

Witnesses told police that they saw two young men fleeing south on Sacramento Street and then heading west through the parking lot of a nearby laundromat, according to Kusmiss.

The victims, who were in their late 30s or early 40s, were taken to a hospital, where one was later pronounced dead. Kusmiss said the other man suffered gunshot wounds to his lower body and was in serious condition.

The homicide is the fifth in Berkeley so far this year.

Kusmiss said that although dozens of shots were fired, there's no indication that stray bullets struck nearby businesses or hit anyone else.

She said Berkeley police are asking anyone with information about the shooting to call the department's homicide unit at (510) 981-5741 or Crime Stoppers at (800) 222-8477.

The two victims were rushed to a local trauma center, where one of the victims died of his wounds, Kusmiss said.
