Today, the city of Galt payed tribute to a police officer who was hit and killed by a drunk driver while on the way to help with he Caldor Fire.
In the decade leading to the Caldor Fire, the agency treated 1,000 acres in the wildland-urban interface.
While many people are rebuilding, there have been lessons learned in the efforts to suppress flames while mitigating wildfires. The U.S. Forest Service has multiple fuel-reduction treatments either in the works or about to start in the Lake Tahoe Basin. One that looks interesting is the Caldor Restoration Project.
Pollock Pines was under threat and had to evacuate due to the Caldor Fire. The wildfire burned for nearly 70 days. Thousands of fires were saved, in part, due to work done ten years before, according to the USFS.
The fire, which burned 22,835 acres and destroyed over 1,000 buildings, started on this day one year ago.
In an area damaged by the Caldor Fire, PG&E will put six miles of overhead lines underground. That is a portion of the 175 miles of undergrounding that the company says they will complete this year.
Cutthroat Brewing Company is one of several businesses now struggling to stay afloat since rain on the Tamarack burn scar, caused by the Caldor Fire, made mud spill into town amid a flash flood.
The 2021 fire burned for 69 days; in that time, more than 221,000 acres were burned, and 1,003 structures were destroyed.
