On May 29th the Sacramento Tree Foundation held the annual Tree Hero Awards. The dinner was held beneath the verdant, heritage 300 year old native oak grove at the California Farm Bureau hosted 250 attendees, including leaders of Sacramento's most influential businesses, national and state elected officials, and tree lovers from around the region. Cleaner air, healthier communities, and economic prosperity are the result of a healthy urban forest. For this reason, our region's long-term health, economic vitality and quality of life depend on investing in and maximizing the benefits of our urban forest — it depends on our commitment to trees and to those that champion them. C.K. McClatchy Award Fatima Malik Austin B. Carroll Award, Pacific STIHL Growing Greenprint Award, Division of State Architect (DSA) Legacy Award, Fair Oaks Bluff Blue Oak Special Award for Ray Tretheway, receiving the Tree Hero Lorax Award for his service to the foundation and retirement after 30+years with the Sacramento Tree Foundation.
With more than 750 people in attendance and $192,000 raised, the Salvation Army's Annual Community Luncheon was a big success, on May 28th. This year, SMUD received the "Spirit of Caring" award at the McClellan Conference center for its commitment to improving the Sacramento area. The Salvation Army also put the spotlight on the Booker family, who's overcome drug addiction and homelessness through Army programs. The nonprofit will soon be able to help even more people. Major Ivan Wild announced an expansion of Workforce Development Programs and an evolving partnership with the Sacramento Police Department.
On May 23rd, The Asian Pacific American Advocates (OCA) held the sold-out annual Dinner and Awards at the Double Tree by Hilton. The Dragon Boat Festival Celebration is a gathering of Sacamento's Chinese-American and many Ethic groups in the community to celebrate the traditional Double Fifth summer solstice holiday. The festival serves as a chance to showcase the community's talents through music and dance performances. Additionally, the festival hosts an awards ceremony for young winners of its annual writing competition as well as distinguished local leaders and organizations that have contributed to the community's development. Lee, Founder, Asian Resources, Inc and API Rise Chris Mateo, Project Coordinator, Democratic Office of Communications and Outreach (DCO) at California State Assembly OCA National, founded in 1973, is a national organization dedicated to advancing the social, political and economic well being of Asian Pacific Americans in the United States. OCA National is the only national Chinese American based, multi-cultural organization headquartered in Washington D.C. The presence in Washington D.C. allows OCA to effectively monitor legislation and policy issues that impact our community. Today, there are 14 other national Asian Pacific American organizations in our nation's capitol with which OCA has built a strong alliance.
