Will They Debate? Stalemate Looms Over U.S. Senate Race

LOS ANGELES (AP) - Candidate debates are usually routine events in political campaigns. But not in California's U.S. Senate contest.

The two Democrats seeking the seat - Attorney General Kamala Harris and congresswoman Loretta Sanchez - have been unable to agree when and where to hold debates, or even how many there should be.

At this point it's possible a debate will never take place before Election Day.

Harris earlier agreed to two debates: one in Sacramento and one in Los Angeles.

But the squabbling continued Tuesday, with Sanchez proposing a series of four debates.

Harris is sticking with her initial plan, while the Sanchez campaign says Harris is "closing the door" on voters.

Meanwhile, time is running short. Mail-in ballots will begin arriving at homes in about a month.
