UPDATE: Vandals Damage Classrooms At Four Schools In San Juan Unified

CITRUS HEIGHTS (CBS13) – Vandals hit four schools in the San Juan School District over the weekend, breaking windows and smashing computers in at least one, according to officials.

Sylvan Middle School, Citrus Heights Elementary School, Carriage Drive Elementary School and Mesa Verde High School were all targeted by vandals with Sylvan being the hardest hit.

A school custodian at Sylvan Middle School on Auburn Boulevard discovered the vandalism on that campus around 5:30 Monday morning, according to Trent Allen, director of community relations at San Juan Unified School District.

Allen says 11 classrooms were damaged. The vandals broke windows, damaged desks, spray painted white boards, discharged a fire extinguisher and smashed computers.

"This is totally ridiculous," said parent Coventry St. Mary. "It's tough enough now that all our programs are getting cut at schools, our bus service, all this stuff. Then they come in and take what's left, the little things that's left from the school."

School officials scrambled to clean up nine of the 11 classrooms Monday morning so students could attend their last week of classes. Allen says two of the classrooms are so badly damaged they will be closed all day, maybe longer.

"Every school day is meaningful," said Allen. "There was instruction planned for today that was supposed to happen and will have to be made up before the end of the school year."

The last day of classes at Sylvan is June 11.

There are no surveillance cameras on the Sylvan Middle School campus, but some of the others school do have cameras. The district will review those tapes.
