Sacramento shooting leaves 16-year-old dead, 1 arrested

Sacramento police said on Wednesday that a person was booked into jail after a 16-year-old was killed in a weekend shooting.

The shooting happened shortly before 12:15 a.m. Saturday on Taylor Street, and the victim was later located along the 500 block of Wisconsin Avenue, police said.

Officers who responded to the scene found a 16-year-old boy injured, and he was pronounced dead at the scene. His identification has not been released.

On Wednesday, police said 48-year-old Rene Monjaras of Sacramento was booked into jail on charges related to being a felon in possession of a firearm. Jail records show Monjaras is being held on no bail.

Police said detectives are investigating the shooting.

The shooting comes after a recent decision by the city to make funding cuts to the Youth Violence Intervention Program, which aims at reducing crime among youth.
