Some Jobs Out There, But Who Wants Them?

SACRAMENTO (CBS13) -- Unemployment in California now tops 12 percent, making it the second worst in the nation.

Searching for a job can take weeks, months, even years.

"I'll take anything, basically I need a job right now," said one frustrated job seeker.

"It seems like there are no jobs out there," said another.

But there are jobs out there, many business owners tell us, people just aren't applying. Job experts say it's just a matter of what you're looking for.

According to the state's Economic Development Department, the industries with the most jobs in 2010 were:

  • In-home health care
  • Retail
  • Cashier
  • Restaurant servers
  • Food preparation

But the pay. Not too enticing. All are under $11 an hour.

Job placement agency Sacramento Works says most of these entry-level jobs only require on-the-job training, even with in-home health care, but at $10.41 an hour, it's not much of a living.

"The type of job isn't glamorous. The pay is not the type of pay that is something that can support your family when gasoline is $4 an hour and you are getting paid $10 an hour," said Terri Carpenter of Sacramento Works.

And with unemployment benefits, some out of work find themselves making more by just staying home looking for that high-paying wage.

And that's why low-paying jobs always have a high turnover.

Restaurant Ten22 in Old Sacramento is looking to fill entry-level positions. But they say starting here can lead to higher-paying opportunities.

"It's your starting foot in the door position," said the restaurant manager.

But for those out of work and running out of benefits, it's just about finding the job, not about the pay.

What about working at KFC?

"Well, I would take that if they were hiring," said one job seeker.

The highest-paying job on the list with the most openings was registered nurses, number six on the list, it's hard to fill that particular job because of the skill sets and education required.
