Sacramento's Parks Ranked Second Best In The Nation

SACRAMENTO (CBS13) – Sacramento and San Francisco are tops in the nation when it come to their city parks, according to a new report.

The Trust for Public Land, a non-profit conservation organization, released the report which ranked the nation's 40 largest cities. The study looked at the percentage of residents living within a 10-minute walk of a park, the proportion of land dedicated to parks, and the number of playgrounds and spending per capita on the park system.

San Francisco came in first with a score of 74 out of 100, while Sacramento was close behind with a 73.5. Boston, New York and Washington DC rounded out the top 5.

Another California city, San Diego, made the top ten coming at number 8. However, California also took the bottom spot with Fresno coming dead last.

The report shows Sacramento has 5,069 acres of parks the largest being the American River Parkway. The most visited park is Old Sacramento. The city spends $156.62 per resident on parks, according to the report.

Despite the ranking, Sacramento is struggling, along with most cities, as funding for local parks continues to get cut.  Recently, SaveMart Supermarkets matched $500,000 in donations to reopen six of Sacramento's 12 city pools.
