Person of interest arrested as Sacramento police investigate suspicious death in South Natomas

A man is dead and another person is in custody after Sacramento police served a search warrant on Thursday.

Sacramento police say they entered the apartment of Richard McClintic, 59, on San Juan Road in South Natomas in connection with his disappearance. He had been missing since Oct. 25.

McClintic was considered at-risk due to having medical conditions, including cerebral palsy.

Officers found a body inside the residence, police say, prompting a suspicious death investigation. A relative of McClintic's confirmed to CBS Sacramento that McClintic was the person found dead.

The Sacramento County Coroner's Office has not officially identified the body or the cause of death.

Police say they arrested 41-year-old Christina Cowens, McClintic's caretaker, who was booked into jail on charges of unlawful disposal of human remains, grand theft and conceal/attempt to conceal a death. Those charges may change when the victim is officially identified and the cause and manner of death are determined, police said.

Cowens is scheduled to make her first appearance in court on Monday. Jail records show she is ineligible for bail.

McClintic's family member said a vigil would be held Friday evening at McClintic's apartment.

Ten years ago, in August 2015, CBS News Sacramento profiled McClintic for a story about his need for a new motorized scooter and a new machine that would help him find his voice.

He was nonverbal and an upgraded machine would help him type out his words. Then, it would speak for him. Viewers saw the story and donated money so he could buy a chair and a machine.
