Sacramento Officers Reunite With Boy 6 Years After Arden Standoff

SACRAMENTO (CBS13) — It was an emotional reunion on Thursday between officers, deputies and the boy they saved from a nearly 3-day hostage standoff six years ago.

Michael was just 16 months old of the time, and while the 7-year-old doesn't remember the details of the terrifying ordeal, it was powerful to see him reunite with the brave men who saved his life.

A picture of Sgt. Orrlando Mayes carrying out Michael in June 2010 comes to mind. After an intense 55 hours, he brought the baby out of the Arden Way apartment uninjured.

"It was a very special moment it really, really was just to see him thrive and see him running around," he said Thursday.

The incident involved tactical teams and negotiators from the sheriff's department, Sacramento Police and other agencies who worked to get the baby's uncle to surrender.

During the incident, several shots were exchanged between the suspect and officers until they finally made their way in.

"Those situations don't always turn out positive and to get him and see that he was OK was a really good feeling I felt a sense of accomplishment not just for myself but for the team," he said.

Michael's parents joyfully watched the reunion. Michael doesn't remember what happened, but they will never forget.

Michael had a chance to spend quality time with the officers, and has a new found inspiration for what he wants to do when he grows up.

Also, another of Michael's uncles who was in the military at the time was so inspired by the officers' work, that he is now a deputy with the Sacramento County Sheriff's Department.
