Sacramento man arrested in freeway shootings that left 1 person seriously hurt

One person has been arrested in connection with what law enforcement officials said was a series of shootings on Sacramento-area freeways on Wednesday.

The California Highway Patrol said officers responded to several reports of vehicles struck by gunfire on city area freeways. Sacramento police also said a shooting was confirmed to have happened on southbound Highway 160 in the North Sacramento area.

Sacramento police initially located the shooting victim near Vine and Dos Rios streets, near the Smythe Academy of Arts and Sciences Middle School. The person was taken to a hospital with serious injuries. No other injuries have been reported.

Due to the investigation, Highway 160 was closed to traffic at Canterbury Road. Southbound Interstate 5, which also had law enforcement activity related to the Highway 160 incident, was also closed at Richards Boulevard. The freeways reopened around 11 a.m.

Officers also looked into whether a vehicle found shot at along K Street was connected to the same incident.

Yellow police tape was later put up at the River Terrace Apartments near West El Camino Avenue and Millcreek Drive in South Natomas, where one person had been detained.

With assistance from the Sacramento Police Department, the CHP said investigators later located a vehicle believed to be involved in the shootings and arrested 33-year-old Raymond Calderon of Sacramento.

Calderon was booked into the Sacramento County Main Jail and was arraigned on more than a dozen charges on Friday, officials said. Some of those charges include attempted murder, discharge of a firearm from a motor vehicle, assault with a firearm, assault likely to produce great bodily injury, felon in possession of a firearm, prohibited person in possession of ammunition, evading a peace officer, shooting at an occupied vehicle and driving under the influence of drugs.

Investigators also recovered two firearms during the investigation, which will be tested by forensic experts.

"Freeway violence puts innocent lives at risk," CHP Assistant Chief Ben Moser said in a statement. "We thank the Sacramento Police Department and the community members who acted quickly and were good witnesses. Their help led to this arrest."
