Sacramento City Councilman Proposes "Soda Tax"
SACRAMENTO (CBS13) - A Sacramento City councilmember is considering a soda tax to help pay for park and recreation programs.
Councilman Kevin McCarty says the tax would be part of a broader package to address the city's childhood obesity problem.
"There are many cities across the Nation that are looking at this right now, New York, Philadelphia, Seattle," explained McCarty.
No language for the tax has been written yet.
But, McCarty has pitched a one cent tax for each ounce of soda wiith a cap at ten cents per beverage.
Any new tax would have to be approved by voters.
