Roger Dickinson Decides Not To Run For Sacramento Mayor

SACRAMENTO (CBS13) — Former state Assemblyman Roger Dickinson says he will not run for mayor of Sacramento.

After Mayor Kevin Johnson announced last week he would not seek a third term, Dickinson said he was considering a run for mayor, saying his experiences make him qualified for the job, but had to talk it over with family and friends before officially throwing his hat in the ring.

On Tuesday, however, he announced he would not be running.

"...after careful consideration and consultation, I have decided to not become a candidate for Mayor," said Dickinson in a statement on Tuesday.

He says he will throw his support behind Darrell Steinberg, who is expected to announce his candidacy for Sacramento mayor soon.

Steinberg, former leader of the State Senate, already holds more than $1 million in cash from statewide campaign contributions. His supporters have reportedly begun printing signs.

Sacramento City Councilwoman Angelique Ashby formally announced her run for office last week.

"What do we want next? I'm proud to be a leader on the current council," Ashby said at a press conference. "I'm not the same as Mayor Johnson. We are very different individuals, for one thing I'm a woman."

Mayoral candidates will not be able to begin formally file their campaign papers to run for mayor until February.
