A road in Orangevale was closed on New Year's Day due to a standoff, authorities said.

The Sacramento County Sheriff's Office said a standoff was underway with a person who may have fired shots from a handgun into the air while in the backyard of a home along Dixon Oaks Lane around noon. 

The suspect, who was possibly armed, barricaded himself in his parents' home and was alone, deputies said.

Nearby homes were advised to evacuate, with some choosing to shelter in place, the sheriff's office said.

By about 3 p.m., the suspect peacefully surrendered. His identification has not been released.

The California Highway Patrol closed southbound Hazel Avenue at Elm Avenue and northbound Hazel at Centria Avenue. It reopened shortly after the suspect surrendered.

No injuries were reported.
