Horse Dies After Running Into Truck

YUCAIPA, Calif. (AP) — Authorities say a horse was killed and its 72-year-old rider was seriously injured after the animal ran into a road and collided with a truck in Southern California.

A San Bernardino County sheriff's statement says Dorothy Potter was riding the horse on the dirt shoulder of a road in Yucaipa on Monday when the horse inexplicably began running uncontrollably into the street.

The statement says 49-year-old Manuel Montoya of Victorville was driving a Ford commercial box truck and tried to steer clear, but the horse ran straight into the truck.

Authorities said Potter had major injuries, but did not give specifics.

Montoya was not hurt and the truck had only minor damage.

The horse died at the scene and was removed by animal control officers.

Yucaipa police are investigating.
