"Homeless Connect" Helps Thousands In Need

SACRAMENTO (CBS13) – The homeless population in Sacramento got a lot of help Saturday at an event called "Homeless Connect."

About a thousand people attended the event where they got haircuts, clothing, free dental and vision screenings among many other services.

Some also walked away with housing vouchers for temporary and permanent homes.

Organizers say they're seeing more single mothers and their children out on the streets as well as veterans coming home from war.

"We're seeing an increase in homeless from people that were just low income wage earners that due to a situation beyond their control they found themselves homeless," said John Johnson of Sacramento's Steps Forward.

One woman told CBS13 that she and her husband now live in an apartment thanks to Homeless Connect.

The event is now its fifth year of serving the homeless and is held at Sacramento City College.
